Course Description

Globalization both depends on and promotes ICTs (Information Communication Technologies). Social media in particular has become an inevitable part of our personal and professional lives and at the same time is emerging as a significant form of global communication. Therefore, in this theory-driven class we will pay close attention to social media against the backdrop of globalization.

The course will draw on literatures from media studies, communication, sociology, cultural studies, international studies, journalism, as well as economics and political science in order to prompt you to engage in critical analysis of the causes, patterns, and outcomes of using social media in a global context. We will critically explore the role that digital media play in producing our identities as global citizens, audiences, workers, consumers, and activists. We will examine relevant case studies and explore current trends in social media as they relate to individuals and organizations. You will be expected to engage with digitally mediated environments in critical and reflexive ways through weekly blogging, class discussions, and presentations.

Goals & Objectives:

After completing this course students should be able to:

  • Communicate understanding of different approaches and theories of social media and globalization
  • Critically grasp the power-structures shaping the access to and use of digitally mediated communicative spaces

· Apply the principles of critical thinking to unpack and deconstruct media representations in relation to globalization

·  Critically analyze, in the context of communication and culture, the role that gender, race, sexuality, geography, and class play in digitally mediated spaces.
